Guide to selecting the right painkiller based on individual needs, using a drag and drop interactive activity.
After recently having a health issue, I was overwhelmed by the amount of different pain medication that was on offer. I felt that if I had trouble picking the correct medicine to take that I could not be the only one facing this issue.
I decided to design and develop eLearning material to help with others to understand what the specifications for each pain medicine would be and when you would need to take it. I wanted it to be interactive where users would have to drag and drop the medicine to the correct patient.
Having used the ADDIE model in my previous projects, I wanted to use a different model to help with the development of this one. I decided to use Gagne's nine events to take me through the production of this course. I knew the general outline of this project and using Gagne's model helped to flesh out the details of the course. I again knew that I wanted to use a drag and drop activity and have the basis of the project around this.
Tool tip to explain the activity
Similar to the previous project, I was using a personal experience of mine and building a project from there. Once I knew that I was going to tackle a guide to pain management I used ChatGPT to build the characters and scenarios that each patient would be facing. I did not want to convolute the project. I wanted to showcase my ability to have a drag and drop activity whilst still highlighting the educational side. Once I collated this information I went on to the next stage of the process.
Once I had the storyboard completed, I went to PowerPoint to create mock-ups of the slides required for this project. The visuals that I wanted was to reflect contemporary life. As this was a health/medicine project, I was trying to find colours that mirrored youth and vitality. This is why I chose a blue-aqua primary colour, I picked black as a secondary colour. To keep the contemporary feeling throughout, the icons that I chose had sharp lines. I also wanted this be echoed in the animations and slide transitions. This will be developed further in the full development stage.
End slide
Once the storyboarding and visual mock-ups were developed I went into the full development of the project. Due to the length of the project and thorough planning the creation of this was relatively quick. The main part of the project was the drag and drop activity so the build-up information was comparatively short. the main interactivity came on this slide, being able to select each patient information individually was done purposely so the user would have to match the medicine specification one by one. This was also the case with dragging each medicine individually before being able to select the next one.
Drag and drop activity
Drag and Drop: The drag and drop functionality was satisfying to use once this project was complete. I gained great fulfilment when creating a project from what I had envisioned. Yes, there were elements that had to be changed mid-development due to programming issues. However, overall this was a satisfying project to develop and complete.
Animations: There were certain interactions that I would have liked to add, however due to time constraints and limitations, this wasn't able to be created. One example of this would be the medicine specifications. I would have liked to design this as an actual pharmacy slip. I also would have liked to have an animation of it rolling out, similar to someone viewing their prescription.
